[BB] LMS Survey

Blackboard has been at UM since 1999.  Currently 62% of all course sections with more than 3 people have an active Blackboard space.  A group of faculty from the Academic Computing Advisory Committee and I are reviewing the Learning Management System (LMS) market to see what competitors to Blackboard have to offer.  This review helps us determine whether we should renew our contract with Blackboard or migrate to another LMS that would provide significant benefits to faculty and students.  


As part of this review, we would like to gather feedback and ideas from our faculty and students.  Please take a few minutes to complete this survey, so we can better understand your experience using Blackboard or another system as part of the teaching and learning mission of the University.  Your input will be very valuable to our decision-making process.


If we did choose to replace Blackboard with another tool, this would be a 18-24 month process where both systems will be available for teaching and reference purposes. We would also help faculty migrate their courses to the new system and offer preview sessions, training, and support.

Service Alert

  

Due to an upgrade, Blackboard will be unavailable on Saturday December 26th 2015, starting at 3:30 a.m. through Sunday December 27th 9:00 p.m.

 

The upgrade does not include major changes to functionalities, it will be mostly internal bug fixes. You still will have the familiar look and feel we currently have.

1.       If you have initiated a course copy and don’t see the information right away, do not redo the course copy. The queue is backed up and all the jobs are waiting to be processed, so it will only create duplicated records if you run it again.

 

2.       Instructors may not be able to delete content from their course.

Dear Blackboard Users,

 

We are here to assist you with the tasks that are often done when setting up a Blackboard course site. Let us know if we can do any of these, or anything else, to assist you at the start of this semester. Send email to blackboardhelp@miami.edu, call 305-284-3949, or when available fill out the form, to make a request or get assistance.

 

 

1.       Course Site Availability

 

When created, course sites are unavailable to students. This way you can set them up before the students access them. Call or email us and we can make them available to your students, or you can follow these easy steps to do it yourself:

2.       Course Site Merge

 

If you teach multiple sections of a course, or have both graduate and undergraduate students in the same course, it may be easier to combine them into one Blackboard course site, rather than have a separate site for each section. With the merged site, you can post your course material once rather than posting it in each section’s site separately. Tell us what sites you want merged and we will take care of it for you.

 

·         Form to request a course merge

 

Note: Courses should be merged before any student activity takes place in the course sites for the various sections. User records, such as discussion board posts, grades, and assessment attempts, will not show up in the new, merged, site.

 

3.       Course Site Augment

 

We can do a course "augment" rather than a course merge if you would like. An augment maintains all of your original course sites and adds one additional master site with all of the students from your various sections. With the course augment option you can use the master site to post course material in one location, and reserve the individual section course sites for assignments or tests specific to each course section.  Fill out the form below or call to request a course augment.

Hi Bill,

 

Dear Blackboard Users,

 

At the present time, we are unable to upload and embed YouTube videos using YouTube Mashup. The uploaded video can be found on youtube.com, but searching for it in the Items Mashup returns videos directing users to https://youtube.com/devicesupport.

A YouTube error video showing "https://youtube.com/devicesupport" is displayed, depicted below. The video will not play within Learn in this condition due to an incorrect embed URL .


 

A patch is being worked on by Blackboard. Until the patch is released, you can find more information on how to work around the issue and post videos from YouTube in your course in our blog at the link below:

Dear Blackboard user,

 

Friday May, 15th 2015 at 2 am, maintenance will be done on the Blackboard system. After that maintenance, the direct submission of files to SafeAssignment will see a small cosmetic change. To submit a file you used to click on the blue “+” sign. Now you will click on the “Submit Paper” button. Please see the images below.

With the beginning of summer term, you might like to have your Blackboard course sites setup in a specific way. Below are services we offer for your course sites. 1.      Course Merge
