[BB] Blackboard System Upgrade: UPDATE

Blackboard Users,

As you know, Blackboard is currently down. It will be back up and publicly available on Thursday, July 5th.

After speaking with the people at Blackboard today, we are on schedule to test the system starting Tuesday, July 3rd. We will have the 3rd and 4th of July to test the new system to make sure it is ready to release.

When Blackboard makes the system privately available to us (through a URL), we will share it with you so that you can review your course sites and make sure everything looks OK. We will ask that you not share this URL with your students because we will take the system back down if there are any problems. Blackboard will be available to students on July 5th.

Stay tuned for more information on testing the new system when it becomes available to us.

Also, stay tuned for another message that will give an overview of new features in Blackboard System 7.2.

Information for Instructors with Courses on the Temporary Server

For those of you who have had your courses moved to the temporary server, you can remain on the temporary server for the rest of the semester. At the end of the summer, we can move your course back over to regular Blackboard for posterity (if you want that).
* Remember that any courses that were moved but not edited do not need to be moved back. All the content that was on Blackboard before it went down will still be there when it comes back up.

For those who have NOT had courses moved, but have had temporary courses and accounts created, you may want to switch back to regular Blackboard when it is available again. Any content that you posted before Bb went down will still be there, so if you haven’t posted too much new content to the temporary server, it might be easier to abandon it. Since your students are logging in to the temporary server with temporary accounts (while students in courses that were moved before Bb went down have the same login info as they do on regular Bb), it may be easier for them to return to the regular Blackboard site.

Thank you for all your patience and contribution to this great effort.

One additional note…. If you need access to your gradebook for Summer1 grades you can retrieve them and save them as an Excel file before Blackboard goes down tonight.

To open your gradebook in Excel so that you can save or print it follow these steps:
  1. Go to the Control Panel

  2. From the Gradebook, click the "Download Grades" button
  3. Select Comma delimited and click "Submit" button
  4. Click "Download" button … choose whether you want to save or open the file and click OK

  5. You can format the column headers to make them easier to read.

  6. Save the Excel file.

[BB] Saving your course content

Blackboard Users,

Are there old courses that you would like to save or course content that you would like to access outside of Blackboard?

You can save your Blackboard course content to your computer, and there is a free tool from UNC called “bFree” that will organize it for you. Here’s how…

Save Your Course

  1. Go to the Control Panel and click the Archive Course link. This will allow you to create a zipped file and save it to your desktop.

  1. Go to this Web site (http://its.unc.edu/tl/tli/bFree/) and click the Information & Download link.
  2. Scroll down and click the Click here to download bFree link
  3. Once you have installed the application, you will see the following interface.
  4. Click the Open an exported zip file… button

  1. Navigate to the location where you saved your archived course and select that zipped file.
  2. Your course content will appear as directories in the bFree window (below)
  3. Choose what content you want to extract by checking the boxes on the right
  4. Then choose whether or not you would like to extract your course as a Web site (where you navigate content using an HTML page) or as a directory structure.  (See examples at the bottom of this message.)
  5. Click Extract button you choose at the bottom of the window.

  1. Choose where you would like to archive your course content. If you would like to save it to its own directory, enter the directory name at the prompt

Files/Folders Vs. Web Site Navigation

Here is the difference between the two different types of navigation based on the two different extraction types:

Extract as Files/Folders                                    Extract as Web Site (links)

Saving your course will allow you to access to all your course content on your own computer, and you will be able to view it outside of Blackboard. If you have any questions, call the Help Desk: 305-284-3949.

bFree works with Windows and Mac OS X. It requires that you have the latest Java Software installed.
