[BB] Tip of the Week

Hello BB Users,

If you are not familiar with it, Blackboard allows you to create assignments for students which they can submit electronically. If you usually have students email you their assignment, blackboard offers the benefit  to free space from your email box or if you print them,  you don’t have to carry a pile of hard copies.

How to create an assignment?

1.       Go to the control panel

cid:image002.png@01CAB48C.A7337930

1.       Open a Content Area, such as Course Documents or Assignments.

cid:image003.png@01CAB48C.A7337930

2.       Select “Assignment” from the Action Bar and click Go.

cid:image004.png@01CAB48C.A7337930

3.       Enter the name of the assignment.

cid:image005.png@01CAB48F.970E4BE0

4.       Click on Submit

4.       An assignment was submitted by a student         if you see the following icon in the grade column:

cid:image020.jpg@01CAB494.D2FC9AD0

5.       Next to the iconcid:image023.jpg@01CAB494.D2FC9AD0, click on the dropdown and got to “Grade Details”.

cid:image012.png@01CAB490.29FD0AE0

6.       You will now have access the “Grade Details” page:

cid:image024.jpg@01CAB494.D2FC9AD0

7.       Click on “View Attempt” to locate the assignment uploaded.

cid:image016.png@01CAB490.29FD0AE0

**Careful not to click on “Clear Attempt”, it will remove the assignment and the student will have to resubmit it**

8.       Click on the “User’s Files” link to open the student’s assignment

cid:image017.png@01CAB490.29FD0AE0

[BB] Tip of the Week.

Hello BB Users

Have you ever wished you could have more control over your navigator menu bar? Maybe you wanted to remove some of the unused buttons, or add some of your own?

From the Manage Course page, the Instructor adds and modifies the menu areas on the course Web site. For example, the Instructor can choose to have areas for Staff Information, specific Content Areas, and Course Links.

On the Manage Course Menu page they can add an area and modify the name to suit the course.

Menu areas may include:

·         Folders that hold course information such as Course Documents or Announcements

·         Specific items such as a course syllabus

·         URLs

·         Course Links, which link to other areas within the course

Today’s tip will review the process to customize the navigator menu bar:

1.       Go to the Control Panel.

2.       Click on “Manage Course Menu” under “Course Options”.

3.       Here is an example of a “Manage Course Menu” Page.

4.       Content Area.

Course Content Areas are used to organize all course content materials. A link to each Content Area creates the first level of the Course Menu tree directory. Course developers organize and manage Content Areas from the Control Panel.

5.       Add a “Tool Link”.

Course Tools are communication and collaboration tools that enhance interaction between users.

6.       Add a “Course Link”.

The Add New Area: Course Link page enables the Instructor to add a link to another area within the course Web site. This flexibility in the Course menu gives the Instructor many options for providing Students with direct access to course tools and materials.

Instructors may add a link to an Assignment or an Assessment that is due. The item would then be listed in a Content area and also on the Course menu.

7.       Add an “External Link”.

The Add New Area: External Link page enables the Instructor to add an External Link area to the course Web site. When users select this area in the Course Menu they will automatically be taken to the URL linked to this area.

8.       Modify an Area.

At any time you may modify or update your course menu by clicking on the “Modify” button to the right. For example you can change the name or change the availability of the button in the navigator menu bar.

9.       Remove an Area.

At any time you may remove an area by clicking the “Remove” button to the right. Use this function for example, if you decide not to use some of the default buttons appearing in your navigator menu bar.

A message will appear verifying that this area will be removed. This action is irreversible.

10.   Order Content.

You can change the order of your menu by changing the number to the left of the Area.

If you have any question regarding this tip or about anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me at the blackboard help desk number: 305-284-3949 or email me at r.ramos3@miami.edu

I hope you have enjoyed this tip today and as always any feedback you can provide is welcome.

Thanks,

Re: [BB] Blackboard Problems RESOLVED

As far as we know, everything is up and running. Blackboard is still investigating the cause of the sporadic up and down time this morning, but all of the schools affected are currently working as they should be.

Thank you for your patience,

Jennifer

Bb Users,

Blackboard is experiencing some unavailability right now. (though it seems to be sporadic). I spoke with Blackboard, and there is a situation that is affecting several schools, and I am waiting for an update on what the problem is and when it will be completely fixed.

I’m very sorry for this, and I’ll send another update as soon as I have one.

[BB] Tip of the Week

Hello BB Users,

Last week we reviewed the process to send an email from Blackboard. Today I will review with you how to use the Announcement function.

Blackboard dedicates the majority of course site screen real estate to announcements, and taking advantage of that space can improves the effectiveness of your site.

Announcements are posted on the web site where everyone can find them. In addition you can have the announcements mailed to everyone in the class.

This dual mode of communication assures that everyone can get the information that you are sending.

How to post an announcement in Blackboard

1.       Go to the Control Panel.
cid:image019.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. In the “Course Tools” box click “Announcement”
    cid:image020.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

3.       Click the “Add Announcement” button.
cid:image021.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

4.       Enter a subject for the email and message text.
cid:image022.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

5.    Permanent announcements will always appear at the top of the announcement list by date and are displayed indefinitely on the Announcement page. Unless it is absolutely necessary, there is no need to make an announcement permanent.

 cid:image023.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

Non-permanent announcements will appear by date below permanent announcements, and will eventually only be visible when clicking the tabs.
   cid:image024.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. Use the “Date Restriction” function to post the announcement within a determined date range. No recommended if you check the box to Email the announcement as the information may be received before it should be available. I would live this setting alone for the most part.

    cid:image025.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. You have the option to put a link to a document in your course (when you are posting an announcement to let students know that the mid-term review questions are now available, for example).
    cid:image026.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. You have also the option to send the email to all members of the course by checking the Email box:
    cid:image027.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. Click the “Submit” button.
    cid:image028.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

Additional information:

As I was kindly reminded, I forgot to mention last week another way to send an email from Blackboard. Effectively, Dr Asmus reminded me you can also perform this task from the Grade Center, it can be done as follow:

1.       Go to the control panel

cid:image019.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

2.       Click on the Grade Center

cid:image029.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. Select Students to send email to

cid:image030.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. Select “Email”

cid:image031.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. Click on “Email Selected Users”

cid:image032.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. Proceed to enter the subject and Message

cid:image033.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

  1. Click on “Submit”

cid:image034.jpg@01CAA970.B5509970

Thank you all for taking the time to read these tips and I greatly appreciate your feedbacks.

Sincerely,

Rick Ramos
