[BB] Problem printing Word documents from Internet Explorer 7

If you have upgraded to Internet Explorer 7, you may not be able to print Word documents that open within the browser.

One option is to have the Word document open in Word rather than inside the browser window. Word will print the document without any problems.

[REMEMBER: If someone else manages your computer, ask them to take these steps. If this is your computer at home, or you manage your work computer yourself, these steps will make the changes.]

To change your settings so that Word documents open in Word rather than in a frame of your browser, follow these instructions.
  1. Go to the Control Panel on your computer and open the "Folder Options" panel. (If you use "Category View" in the control panel, you will find "Folder Options" within the "Appearance and Themes" category.
  2. Go to the "File Types" tab and wait until the registered file types list appears.
  3. Scroll down, locate the "DOC" extension, and select it.
  4. Click on the "Advanced" button.
  5. UNCHECK the "Browse in same window" check box. (This is the important step!)
  6. Click "OK" and "Close" to close the windows.
From now on, when you click on a .doc file in your browser, Word will be launched and the document will be opened in Word. This gives you all the usual power of Word, including Print, Save As, zooming, and such.

You might also want to do this for .XLS (Excel) and .PPT (PowerPoint) files extensions, if you would rather have these files open in the full applications rather than open in a window in your browser.


Another option is to remove IE7 and revert to IE6. Here are the steps, from Microsoft that I followed to remove IE7 and return to IE6. See FAQ item 2 on http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx. I had to do this, since I use the www.miami.edu web system for the www.miami.edu/iac pages, and IE7 made it impossible for me to edit my pages.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP
  1. Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
  2. Click "Add or Remove Programs."
  3. Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
  4. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove." (If you are running Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview — March 20 or later, it is not necessary to check "Show Updates.")
  5. Select the appropriate version of Internet Explorer 7 for your operating system.
